The Stories we Tell Ourselves

We must be willing to get rid of the life we’ve planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us.                              Joseph Campbell

During our recent Wellness Week in Costa Rica, a profound moment of self-discovery unfolded. A colleague courageously shared her new insight-seeing clearly how her self-deception masqueraded as self-compassion.

For years, she struggled with inconsistent exercise, believing her gentle self-talk—”Maybe tomorrow”—was an act of self-compassion. But a breakthrough revelation shattered this illusion. She realized her excuses weren’t compassion, but a sophisticated defense mechanism preventing her from pursuing her most important goals.  The excuses were disguised as  self-compassion.  She outgrew herself.

This is the magic of self-awareness: when we finally see through our own narratives, we cannot unsee the truth. It was like a mental X-ray exposing the subtle distortions that kept her stuck. Her mind had crafted an elaborate story to protect her from discomfort, all while undermining her deepest intentions.

True change begins when we have the courage to challenge the stories we tell ourselves. By recognizing our mental patterns, we create space for authentic growth.
